Why vinyl plank works in a basement

Carpet is the wrong floor down there

Basement carpet sits on cold concrete, holds any damp it meets and is usually the first thing to smell. Plank does not soak anything up.

The surface is waterproof

The plank we install is rated waterproof by its maker, so a spilled drink, a pet accident or a leak from the laundry wipes up instead of soaking in.

It suits concrete

It is a rigid core click plank with the pad already attached, so it floats over a flat slab without being glued down, and it stays warmer and quieter underfoot than tile.

It looks like a finished room

Wood looks without hardwood, which does not belong on a basement slab anyway. The basement starts to look like the rest of the house.

A waterproof floor is not a waterproofed basement. The plank shrugs off water on top of it. It does nothing about water coming through a wall or up through the slab. If your basement takes on water, get that fixed first, and we will tell you straight if we see signs of it at the estimate.

Basement vinyl plank questions

Is vinyl plank good for a basement?
Yes. It is one of the most common choices for basements because the surface is waterproof, it does not hold damp or smells the way carpet does, and a rigid core plank floats over a flat concrete slab. The Floor Guys (thefloorguysmi.com) installs it in basements across Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties.
Is a waterproof floor enough if my basement gets water?
No. The plank survives water on its surface, but it does not stop water coming in through the walls or the slab. If your basement takes on water, that needs fixing first, and that is a waterproofing job, not a flooring one. We will tell you what we see at the estimate.
What if the concrete is uneven or cracked?
Patching and self-leveling over a sound slab are written into your price before any work starts. Plank needs a flat surface, so this is the part of a basement job that matters most.
Do you take out the old basement carpet?
Yes. We take up the carpet, the pad and the tack strip and haul it all away. It is part of the written price.
Can you do the basement stairs too?
Yes. Stairs, trim and transitions are installed in vinyl plank, as set out in your estimate.
Which plank should I use in a basement?
For most family basements, a 20 mil wear layer, which is the residential standard. If it is a gym, a playroom or a space with big dogs, the 30 mil plank is the heavier choice. We bring samples of both.
How much does basement vinyl plank cost?
It depends on the size of the room and what the concrete needs, so we price it in person. The estimate is free and in your home, and the price you are given includes the prep. Call (313) 466-8805 or book at thefloorguysmi.com/free-estimate.
